The storming of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789, occurred near the dawn of the French Revolution and became a symbol of freedom from oppression during the reign of King Louis XVI. The overindulgent lives of the French royals, which included his wife, Queen Marie Antoinette, were despised by the French people, many of whom were living in extreme poverty. Within a few years after this first major conflict of the revolution at the Bastille, both King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were both removed from power and later executed by guillotine at the Place de la Revolution, the site of the present day Place de la Concorde in the French capital.
