The Roosevelt New Orleans is the proud host September 28 for the 63rd anniversary of a historic New Orleans event, the Storming of the Sazerac.
The Storming of the Sazerac was a well-known New Orleans event that took place in 1949 at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Sazerac Bar. The word Sazerac is derived from the drink by the same name and is believed to be America’s oldest cocktail, dating back to 1857. The Sazerac cocktail consists of cognac or rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint, bitters and a sugar cube or syrup and has been so popular in New Orleans that today it is the city’s official drink, in addition to the State of Louisiana’s Official drink.

Prior to this “storming”, women were only allowed into the Sazerac Bar on Mardi Gras, but all that changed on September 26, 1949, when under new ownership and new location in the Roosevelt New Orleans, finally allowed women inside the bar with no further restrictions. Opening day was known as the “Storming of the Sazerac,” and the event turned out to be a tremendous success, with women far outnumbering the men.
This year, the Roosevelt New Orleans plans to celebrate the occasion with special concessions for the women, particularly if they arrive in 1940s styled outfits. According to the Roosevelt Hotel’s official website, guests are encouraged to participate in a “vintage glamour” costume contest with “celebrity judges.” The festivities are set to begin at 3 p.m., and are expected to draw a number of New Orleans dignitaries and curious onlookers to this lively event.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, a great way to travel to one of New Orleans’ finest luxury hotels is to arrive in a luxury limousine. New Orleans-based Limousine Livery has a long-standing commitment of superior service, which includes corporate travelers, sports fans and even residents of the Big Easy.
