He may have not played much, but New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis can now proudly say that he is an Olympic Gold Medalist.
The top pick in the 2012 NBA draft—the nation’s top collegiate player—Anthony Davis was part of the star-studded USA Basketball team that featured such marquee professional basketball players as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
Despite having arguably the best lineup in U.S. Olympic basketball history, Team USA at times struggled against international teams and came so very close to the biggest upset in team history when they barely got past Lithuania on August 4th.
While New Orleans Hornets rookie Anthony Davis spent more time riding the Olympic bench and averaged less time on the basketball floor than any other Team USA player, he is expected to have a bright future for the Hornets. The former University of Kentucky player had a stellar collegiate career in which led his team to the NCAA Basketball Championship as a 19-year-old sophomore and was the unanimous choice as the best collegiate basketball player in America. With Team USA, Davis also earned the distinction of being the youngest player ever to win a gold medal for Team USA Basketball.
The NBA season is still months away, but NBA fans in New Orleans will expect a lot from the 6’10” tall Davis. Indeed, despite his lack of playing time with the world’s greatest basketball players, there was one statistic that went unnoticed to only those fans and basketball experts who inspected the tournament individual leaders in Olympic basketball: Davis ranked sixth amongst all players in shooting percentage with an impressive shooting average of .647.
Be sure to keep an eye on Davis and the rest of the Hornets this season. We live in a city that relies on quality entertainment for a quality experience, should our transportation do the same?
